The Power of Showing Up

(and why the first step matters)

Showing up where? What for? Why would I?
Show up for your counselling appointment – to get the help you reached out for.

You matter. It’s what you want, need, and intended to do. Why stop now?

We all take scary first steps: dentist visits, blood tests, doctors’ results, job interviews, speaking engagements. Day to day, life is full of moments where we have to step forward even when it’s uncomfortable. That motion is what keeps us moving, functioning, growing.

Coming to counselling is no different. It can feel scary, especially the first time –
but it’s still a step in the right direction. For some, that step feels easier: they’re keen, they’ve waited a long time, they want to be there. Yes, there’s still nervousness, still anxiety – but also eagerness to finally show up.

The Myth of Readiness

“Everything has settled down, I don’t really need it anymore”.

“I have to be in a poor state of mind and affairs before I can go”.

“Things aren’t bad enough”.

“I've got the money but…”.

We go because it is a choice to go regardless of one’s circumstances. It is something people need and want, but afraid to take that first step. A lot of it is in one’s mind – making it a scary thing to do, just thinking about it. It stops us from taking that step.

What can you do? Read and embrace this:

I don’t need to have it all figured out. I just need to show up. I can do it. I've got this. I choose it and I will act on it now.”

What It Means to Show Up

You're doing more than walking into a room – you're taking a brave step into an unknown space, to be seen and heard, without judgment. It is giving yourself permission to show up into unknown territory.

It means having the presence of mind and the power of choice to take a step to get the help, assistance, and clarity you need even when life feels messy. Even though it might not feel like it, it takes courage – and that’s something you already possess.

The Power of You is in the Presence of You. It is deeply rooted Passion that will drive you to succeed and scale to heights unknown!

The Impact of the First Step

First steps builds momentum, they get the ball rolling, the body moving, the mind releasing all the fears, anxieties, and concerns, the what ifs. It lightens the load – the very reason for why you are taking your first step. To lighten and unburden your mind - to free it up to think clearly for yourself.

The power is in your presence to show up and allow yourself the freedom to impact your life in a positive and meaningful way. Actually, by the time you take that first step, you will have taken hundreds more in your mind. Just do it. It opens up the pathway before you.

“One Step at a Time. The way is not always clear or easy. Moving forward with Confidence, Courage and Clarity.”

Reframe Your Self-Talk (to get there)

We have all the self-talk in our mind that makes us feel scared, anxious, apprehensive, afraid, sick in the stomach – try reframing it, making the first step easier.

“It feels scary but I want this, I need it, I deserve it.”

“I've got this even if it doesn’t feel like I have.”

“I'm going because I choose to.”

“I've waited a long time for this.”

“I inhale calm, confidence, and clarity. I exhale fear, anxiety, and doubt.”

It’s Not So Scary After All

Taking first steps is a fact of everyday life – we take first steps everywhere we go, even in our heads. Why not take one to where you can work through your stuff? Showing up means you are courageous, powerful, and willing – even if you don’t feel like it. Do it and watch doors open. Self-talk your way to your first appointment! You did it!

Do it. Pick up the phone. Send that email. Make the call. That’s the Power of Showing Up (and why your first step matters)
