Client Rights

At Whanganui Counselling Services, every client has the right to:

1. Respect & Dignity

To be treated with kindness, cultural respect, non-judgement, and dignity - regardless of background, beliefs, or life experiences.

2. Confidentiality

To have their personal information and disclosures kept confidential, with clear understanding of the limits (e.g. risk of harm to self or others, legal obligations).

3. Informed Consent

To be fully informed about the counselling process and to participate in decisions about the direction they want to take - including the right to say yes or no at any time.

4. Safety

To experience counselling in a safe, supportive, and professional environment, free from harm, exploitation, or discrimination.

5. Autonomy

To make their own choices and not be told what to do – I am here to guide, facilitate, walk alongside, and support. I do not adhere to direct or control.

6. Access to Information

To request information about their sessions, progress, or any notes kept, within legal and ethical limits.

7. Feedback & Complaints

To provide feedback, raise concerns, or make a complaint without fear of judgment or consequence - and to have those concerns respectfully acknowledged.

8. Referral & Support

To be offered appropriate referral options if their needs fall outside my scope of practice.

9. End Counselling

To end counselling at any time, for any reason, and be supported in doing so.
